Photography Challenge
Can you shoot digital like film? can you break through the noise and make better photographs by shooting less?
Maybe you’ve been there: scrolling hundreds of near-identical frames, desperately looking for a spark. Maybe you’re snapping compulsively, hoping one out of 400 will feel like something. But lately, the joy feels more like noise.
That’s when you know it’s time to shoot digital like film.
This isn’t nostalgia. It’s a mindset. A reset.
The 36-Frame Challenge
Next time you head out with your camera – whether it’s a street wander, a day hike, or a weeklong visual journal – give yourself this: a hard limit of 36 frames. That’s it. Pretend you’ve loaded a single roll of 35mm film. Treat your digital camera like the precious, finite tool film shooters know it can be.
And when you return? Process your photos, yes, digitally, but take it slow. Look at what you made. All of it. All 36 photos.
This is the discipline of shooting digital like film.
Challenge: Shoot Digital Like Film
Timeframe: from an hour up to a week – that choice is yours.
Shot Limit: 36 frames.
Rules:
- No deleting
- no ‘chimping’ (checking the preview)
- no looking at all before you ‘process’ the photos with Lightroom or other editing software.
Why It Matters
Limiting your frames forces you to see again. You wait. You breathe. You compose like it costs you something. Because it does: your attention, your patience, your care.
You’ll notice things you hadn’t noticed in weeks. The sharp shadow on a weathered fence. The line of light across someone’s collarbone. You’ll pass on shots you would’ve fired off last week. Some, you might regret. Others? You’ll realise they were never the photo anyway.
You might burn through 18 shots in the first hour, then suddenly panic: What if the good stuff’s still coming? Or you might find it hard to even hit 36. That restraint? That’s the gold.
Print it. Feel it!
Want to take this further? Print all 36 images. Lay them out. Touch them. Live with them. You’ll learn more about your eye, your rhythm, and your voice than a thousand Instagram likes could ever tell you.
(We print, by the way. Real prints. On real paper. Come see us at Loop.)
Keep Going!
This isn’t just an exercise. It’s a reminder that photography isn’t about the machine – it’s about how you use it. And how you see.
If you want more help retraining your eye, or reigniting your creative fire, we offer 1-on-1 lessons at Loop: beginner, intermediate, or advanced. Just you, your camera, and some gentle but purposeful guidance.
Try the 36-frame challenge. See if it changes you.
Because maybe it’s not about shooting less. Maybe it’s about seeing more.
