Loop Photo Walks in the Dandenong Ranges

this is what it's like to join the Loop photo walks in the Dandenong Ranges - a group of eager photographers laugh over complicated camera settings, working together to make them simple

The March edition of the Loop Photo Walks in the Dandenong Ranges started at the Olinda Falls Picnic Ground/Carpark. With the lower falls still closed (seriously, Parks Vic, let’s fix this already?), we took the scenic route to the Upper Falls viewing platform. From there, we got a top-down look at the cascading water while conversations flowed as easily as the creek below. Cameras were discussed, admired, and, of course, put to good use because that’s what happens when you gather a bunch of photography lovers in the same place.

A Walk Through The Canopy

I swear the weather forecast had promised warm, sunny skies, but reality had other plans. The air was cool enough to make us second-guess leaving our jackets behind, and the sun only made brief appearances before tucking itself behind thickening clouds. By the time we’d almost made it back to the car park, a few raindrops had started to fall, just enough to add a little drama to the day’s final shots.

The solid cloud cover was a gift, keeping the light soft and even. Shadows were gentle, highlights were controlled, and the deeper jungle sections of the trail provided perfect portrait opportunities. Loop Photo Walks in the Dandenong Ranges are all about embracing the environment, and this one proved just how much light can shape a scene.

The People Who Make It

Eight photographers (plus myself and my daughter) made up today’s group. A few regulars, a couple of fresh faces, and a shared enthusiasm for the craft. Newcomers Alex and Iris settled in quickly, despite enduring my usual collection of dad jokes. As a welcome, each received a portrait, printed on Ilford fine art paper because, at Loop, we believe in making photography tangible.

Regulars like Matt Wong and Jeremy Carlen returned, adding to the sense of community that defines these walks. Jeremy had missed a couple of outings – moving into a new home is a solid excuse – but was back, sharing his perspectives and easygoing presence. The community around Loop Photo Walks in the Dandenong Ranges keeps growing, and it’s this mix of old and new faces that makes each walk feel like catching up with friends.

Photography as Therapy

There’s rarely a theme for these walks. No pressure, no assignments, just a chance to explore, make photos, and enjoy the process. Today, more than ever, the idea of photography as therapy stood out. Slow creativity, fresh air, and the absence of any expectation to “get the shot.” Just being out there, following the trails, making images, and chatting with like-minded people was enough.

After the walk, we headed back to Loop, where we printed some of the day’s photos on beautiful fine art paper. We also chatted about Loop Membership, what it offers, and the upcoming Members Exhibition at the end of the year. It’s moments like these that remind me why Loop exists, not just as a photography space but as a true creative community.
