This night photography workshop in Melbourne is your chance to step into that electric atmosphere, camera in hand, and learn how to transform the city lights into striking images.
What you'll learn
This isn’t a touristy snap-and-go tour. Our small group (max 10 students) will move at a relaxed pace through Melbourne’s CBD, focusing on creative long exposures, experimenting with motion, and uncovering ways to see the city’s nightscape differently. You’ll walk away not just with new techniques, but with a portfolio of images that tell your version of Melbourne at night.
- Long Exposure Magic – from light trails along Flinders Street to silky trams down Collins.
- Motion & Panning – practice freezing the chaos of Bourke Street into fluid, dynamic frames.
- Low-Light Camera Settings – master ISO, shutter, and aperture when the sun’s long gone.
- Creative Composition – use Melbourne’s laneways, bridges, and reflections on the Yarra as your canvas.
Whether you’re shooting with a DSLR, mirrorless, or even film, you’ll get hands-on coaching throughout the evening. Smartphones can tag along too, but their possibilities are a bit more limited.
What to expect
We’ll gather at 6:30pm on the steps of Flinders Street Station before setting off into the heart of the city. Think Federation Square, Southbank reflections, and the hidden laneways that make Melbourne special. Along the way, we’ll stop often to set up, experiment, and review.
The walk is unhurried but expect to cover a fair bit of ground. Bring your tripod, camera, spare batteries, and dress for Melbourne’s unpredictable weather (four seasons in a night is real). If it rains, even better, puddles and reflections make for some of the best night photographs the CBD has to offer.
