The Melbourne photography community has something truly special, and if you were part of the April photo walk, you know exactly what I mean. 28 of us – 29, if you count me – gathered on the steps of Flinders Street Station, ready to hit the streets of Melbourne with our cameras in hand, hearts open, and minds full of curiosity. It was a day that had everything: portraits, plants, and enough photo inspiration to last the rest of the year.
We made our way through the city, but me being me, I couldn’t resist a detour to Fitzroy Gardens. Specifically, the Conservatory – seriously, who can walk past that place and not stop? It’s like stepping into another world, one that makes you forget you’re just a few blocks away from the CBD’s hustle.
But what really made this walk special wasn’t the sights or even the photos we made; it was the people. You all came together in a way that made my introverted self feel right at home. The thing is, the Melbourne photography community is something else. It’s made up of people who genuinely care about each other and what they do. We might have started as one big group, but before long, smaller circles formed, conversations evolved, and it felt like we were all moving through the day together, but in our own little worlds. And it was beautiful.

We connected, shot some portraits, admired the plants, and shared stories. The conversations didn’t just stop with “what gear are you using?” – we were talking about the joy of photography. The little things that make it so special. The magic that happens when you slow down and really look. You all brought something to the table that made the day feel like more than just another walk. It felt like a celebration of us, of the Loop community, of the creative spirit that thrives when we come together.
If you were there, you know exactly what I’m talking about. You made that day what it was. You filled it with warmth, laughter, and energy. I’m so grateful to each and every one of you for showing up and being part of something that, for me, felt pretty damn magical.

For those who missed it, don’t worry. We’ve got more on the horizon. October is already in the works – another city (or city-suburb) walk might be in the cards. And next month? We’re heading back to the iconic Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens. I’ll say it again – you don’t want to miss it. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just starting to dip your toes into the world of film or digital, there’s a space for you here.
So let’s keep making this community stronger, one photo walk at a time. Get ready, because we’re just getting started.
